Red Lion was under a great amount of pressure Friday night.
It was this matchup that would determine whether the last two games would matter or not.
South Western (2-5, 0-2) would rush 51 times for a whopping 292 yards on the night, racking up 23 first downs in the process. But even a strong opposing run attack, would prove valid competition for the Lions.
The Lions began the game with a great kickoff return and two consecutive first downs to set up a short pass from Blake Cahill to Matt Wanbaugh.
Two plays into the second quarter, Kenny Holloway crossed the goal line from 7 yards out to give Red Lion a 13-0 lead. A lead which the Lions would keep into the second half, at least momentarily.
The Lions would allow South Western to start picking up momentum late in the third quarter and the Mustangs would capitalize on the home team’s mistakes.
They Mustangs quickly came back from a two touchdown deficit and tied the game at 13 points with 8:38 remaining in the fourth quarter.
At that point, Red Lion couldn’t afford to make any more mistakes.
Red Lion showed their perseverance to win close ball games when moments later with 4:48 left in the game, Alex Keller came down with an 11-yard pass from Cahill to give the Lions the lead, capitalizing on a momentous 73 yard, eight-play drive.
The Lion’s defense was beginning to show weakness early in the second half but dared not to anymore as they kept the Mustangs out of their own endzone with a Damian Hess interception proved instrumental in securing the 20-13 victory.
The Lions will truly have their strength tested in the final two games of the season as they play Division I leader Central York (6-2, 2-0) and rival Dallastown.
Though head coach Jesse Shay said the team hasn’t talked about the matchups yet, he did say they will be practicing hard in preparation for what will be tough games.
“From now on, every single game they play will be the most important game of their lives.”
